Our organization has developed practical tools for mentoring business organizations. One example of our mentoring services is an interactive and collaborative activity we call roundtables. A roundtable format is used to promote and deliver on the notion of peer-to-peer mentorship by enabling and supporting communities of practice. Small groups are formed based on trust and peer contributions. Experienced business leaders serve as facilitators. Entrepreneurs collaborate to identify business challenges and develop ideas and actionable plans to address them. Participants tap into the collective wisdom and experience of the group to help prevent missteps, discuss difficult business situations and identify potential opportunities.
One or more mentors with small business experience facilitates and guides each roundtable group. The role of the mentor/facilitator is to guide the process by asking questions, sharing experiences and working to help each entrepreneur advance their business. At the conclusion of the roundtable, each entrepreneur publicly shares his or her commitment to execute on actions identified during the working session (i.e., marching orders). This staged business creation system empowers each entrepreneur to benefit personally as well as contribute to the success of their peers. Roundtable discussions with like-minded entrepreneurs have been shown to help business owners align their values, goals and business strategies. Each participant in the roundtable setting learns through their peers' guidance, reflection, and experience.
Market analysis and competitive analysis work will be supplemented by upper-class business students studying Entrepreneurship and Business. Student efforts with be guided and reviewed by GL team members. Student participants could participate in local internships with the respective companies and potentially long-term employment with a U.S. startup doing international business.
